Pai is a small town about three hours north of Chiang Mai set in a valley in the province of Mae Hong Son. Despite the radical changes of Pai town over the years, the hippy, mellow relaxed vibe is still maintained and there are two things that stand out: the live music scene which you probably won’t find anywhere else like in Thailand and the abundance of vegan and vegetarian food.

Although almost every restaurant will advertise that they have vegetarian food there are actually only a handful of pure vegetarian places and only one fully vegan place which only has Thai food. I prefer Earth Tone, because of the interesting and varied menu of western food.

Earth Tone is easy to find. If you are coming to Pai from Chiang Mai, drive through the town and take the 1095 back out towards Mae Hong Son. This is also walkable or rideable on a push bike. You will reach Maeyen temple on the left side which goes up the mountain. On the right of that temple is this restaurant. It is about one kilometre beyond the main part of town.

The menu is actually predominantly vegan, with only a few vegetarian options such as ice cream and the option of egg. The menu is huge and they have seasonal items and they include raw food. The vegan waffle with coconut milk and your choice of topping is very delicious. The vegan tempeh sandwich is a fabulous meal and I don’t know how they make the sauce/dressing in the sandwich so very tasty.

Unfortunately, they close at 5PM so you will need to come here for your breakfast/lunchtime fix. I usually end up coming every day. As well as the main menu, they have a small store with organic products and natural soaps and things although we warn you that they are quite over-priced compared to what you would pay for the exact same product in Chiang Mai.

As well as the desserts in their menu they have a good variety of raw sliced cakes in the fridge in the store. We really appreciate that they label the cakes that contain honey as vegetarian not vegan, since honey is not vegan.

There are some that are completely vegan and some that are completely raw vegan and they are delicious as is everything I tried here. The pages above are just a few samples of the pretty large menu.

This restaurant alone makes Pai a worthwhile place to visit!
