Five Places to Get a Great Vegan Burger!

What we look for:

There are many restaurants in Chiang Mai that sell a vegan burger, so what makes these 5 stand out to us? The things we look for are of course the general taste and size of the burger, as well as the bun it comes in and the fries that it is served with. So many trendy places now seem to serve a measly portion of fries or those skinny American fries which just don’t cut it for us. We also look for any interesting condiments rather than just plain old tomato ketchup. We also don’t go for meat imitations as it is not a taste that we desire, we prefer a burger that showcases beans or vegetables. We also take in to account where there is a choice of burgers and we look for those that are advertised as vegan without having to make any adaptations.

1. Goodsouls Kitchen Chiang Mai

We certainly won’t be the only ones to rave about the amazing burgers that are offered at this favourite vegan restaurant who rarely get anything less than perfect. We were first introduced to their famous mushroom burger at Reform Kafe, which is the bomb and is loved by all. As if that wasn’t enough, their sister restaurant opened with an additional two burgers! These are the quinoa and eggplant and the beetroot burger. In 2019 they also added a delicious tempeh burger! Many of us struggle with choosing which one we like best out of the selection although I know many people like their original classic mushroom burger.

What makes it so good? Apart from the amazing taste it’s also huge in size and doesn’t fall apart in your hands like so many of them do. It also comes with chips at no extra cost and these are real, fat chips that are more like wedges. Extra bonus – the chips even come with a fabulous vegan mayo, something which is very hard to find in Chiang Mai.

2. Food4Thought

Food4Thought offers two vegan burgers, a Tantawan burger and a mushroom burger. Both of these are fantastic. They are good sized, filling and tasty. They do not come with chips but you can order a half portion of fries or sweet potato fries for a small surcharge which makes it a complete meal. The fries come with a particularly good homemade tomato relish.

3. Rustic and Blue

The vegan burger here is quite unique. It is a bean based burger with lots of fillings so it ends up being a huge stack and whilst it is very delicious, it is quite messy to eat especially since the bun is not really big enough to keep the whole stack within itself. It is also sold at a considerably higher price than the others mentioned here, without chips, so you’d have to order them separately and it will end up particularly expensive. If you know this restaurant you’ll expect it, everything is pricey here. Despite these things the burger does actually taste fantastic.

4. Amrita Garden

People have been talking about the vegan burger at Amrita’s for years. As of summer 2018, they introduced a whole new selection of four vegan burgers. We have tried the pulled jackfruit burger and the teriyaki tempeh burger. We are impressed with the variety available. They hold together well and have quite a unique taste although we still felt that they have something missing. They do have the option of adding vegan cheese, which is quite rare. What they definitely have missing is chips/fries. They don’t come with fries and they don’t sell fries at all. How can a burger be a burger without fries?!

5. Archer’s Bar

Archer’s Bar is not a vegan or vegetarian restaurant but the owner is keen to come up with new ideas to make the menu vegan-friendly. They serve a vegan falafel burger which is one that we particularly enjoy. It’s very large and filling and is sold at a good price with only a small surcharge for a decent serving of quality, fat, British style chips. He also has a tasty, tangy homemade brown sauce, which you can also buy by the bottle if you wish. Make sure you mention that you’re vegan when you order.
