Munchies opened up in central Chiang Mai in November 2018 and we first want to say that we fully support the concept behind it. The idea of having a vegan version of McDonalds available nearby every regular fast food restaurant outlet is a wonderful one and we would love to see this happen. Making vegan food accessible to all audiences is certainly a great thing. We can see how Munchies will be very popular with many different types of people including carnivores and vegans alike, it won’t be for all types, however.

The claims that this restaurant is healthy and whole foods based are misleading. The food here is certainly healthier than its meat-based alternative but it isn’t healthy. Everything is fried as well as highly processed, which makes it neither healthy nor whole foods. We think the terms vegan and whole foods are being confused.

Everything about this place is in true fast food style. The interior is not designed for spending any time here. There is limited seating which are high stools set up at a bar around the edge. It is not a comfortable place to sit, as fast food places often aren’t. The dishes are served quickly and are just what you might expect a McDonalds to serve. The burgers are small and full of a mix of undetectable ingredients which we must point out, do taste pretty good. However, the portion sizes are not so great for the price that you pay. We expect to be full after paying 200 BAHT for a meal…

The fish and chips are again, too small, and also extremely greasy. The mac n cheese is a better portion and also tastes good although again contains too much oil. We’d love to see them include a few dishes here that aren’t so reliant on oil and salt to make them taste good.

Now I may be in the minority here but personally I am never craving the taste of meat nor do I desire to eat anything that is attempting to replicate it. I realise this may be important for meat eaters, transitioning vegans or newer vegans, in which case it’s bound to be right up your street. We just prefer our mushroom burger to actually taste like… you know – mushrooms. It really is a personal thing. 🙂

It’s a great move that they’re open until 12, since it’s very hard to get vegan food after around 9PM in Chiang Mai and this is when people are bound to need fast food. If we can get the hungry carnivores with their meat cravings after a few beers to come here as well, then that is fantastic!

If you want wholesome and nutritious food then it won’t be for you. If you just want tasty vegan junk food then you’ll be here all the time!

The family who own it are lovely people who are very passionate about what they’re doing, we’re sure this will bring them every success in their venture of making vegan food accessible to the masses in Chiang Mai!
